Sharing the stories of interesting women and bringing them to life on the canvas

Ethel’s Girl Friday – Megan

Name: Megan

Occupation: Program Coordinator for Title I services

Passionate about and why? The environment and doing my best for it. Climate change is a real issue and although I am only one person, I try my best to take care of it. I garden and grow my own vegetables, I invest in sustainable products, I follow a vegan diet, I try to bike instead of driving whenever possible, and many other things.

Do you have a mentor? Of course, I have a mentor but I cannot choose one. Over the years, my mentor has changed depending on where I am in my life. I’ve looked up to teachers and professional athletes, Civil Rights activists and leaders, friends, family, and opponents.

Who is a female that you admire and why? My sister, Jessica, is a badass woman! She is a female in a male-dominated field. She’s a mighty 5-foot tall, sweet individual. She majored in aerospace engineering and got her dream job since 6th grade working for NASA. She has had open-heart surgery and continues to run and train for half and full marathons.

If you had a theme song, what would it be? On the Sunny Side of the Street- Louis Armstrong

Do you have a favorite artist or author? Artist-Hard to choose 1 here, but Yayoi Kusama or Dali. Author- Another difficult choice to make, but currently it is Junji Ito who writes and draws creepy Manga.

How do you see yourself at 40? …at 70? Since 40 isn’t too far away, I imagine I will be doing exactly what I am doing now. Hopefully by 40, I will have checked more National parks off my list! I hope to be healthy and thriving at age 70! I will be gardening and enjoying my days with my cats. Since I will hopefully be retired, I’d like to volunteer my time with organizations such as Big Brother, Big Sister.

What do you love most about yourself? It has been a long road to get to the point of loving myself. I think it is truly something special to be able to see all you have done and what your body can accomplish and love where you currently are. As one of my good friends has said, I have a “lust for life.” I love that I am able to appreciate the smallest things and that I find the beauty in just everyday occurrences.
